Our Academic Board

The Academic Board is the primary source of advice to the IVMA Board on matters relating to learning, teaching and scholarship. It oversees all academic functions of the Institute, including academic governance, curriculum development, delivery and assessment, while promoting academic freedom and guiding staff research.

Responsibilities

The Functions of the Academic Board

  • Assisting and advising the IVMA Board on all matters relating to and affecting the Institute's teaching activities and educational programs, including:
    • Rules governing awards and courses of study
    • Admission of students
    • Curriculum review process
    • Assessment moderation process
  • Recommending to the IVMA Board the awarding of all academic qualifications.
  • Recommending to the IVMA Board the submission of completed applications for accreditation of new and existing courses.
  • Overseeing and monitoring course delivery across all campuses and receiving reports on the same.
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of academic policies and procedures, and reporting and recommending to the IVMA Board accordingly.
  • Overseeing the quality of learning, teaching, and scholarship.
  • Ensuring students and lecturers have the opportunity to provide feedback on their educational and teaching experiences.
  • Advising on educational aspects of the Institute's Strategic Plan and Risk Management Plan.
  • Developing detailed advice on new academic developments, priorities, and innovations.
  • Receiving reports from and overseeing the work of Academic Board Committees, including the Learning and Teaching Committee and Curriculum Design Committees.
  • Reporting directly to the IVMA Board on the above matters.

Brings over a decade of senior academic leadership across curriculum governance and higher education strategy, with a focus on strengthening institutional accreditation and quality frameworks.

Independent Member, Academic Board

An expert in creative industries pedagogy with a research background spanning media theory and transdisciplinary teaching practice across several regional universities.

Prof. Ranjith Abeywickrama

Independent Member, Academic Board

Extensive experience in academic governance, having chaired faculty boards and curriculum committees across several higher education institutions.

Nuwan Perera

Head of Cinematography

A working cinematographer and educator whose credits span commercial and independent film production across Sri Lanka's growing screen industry.

Head of Editing

Chamodi Herath

Head of Film & Video Editing

A post-production specialist with a background in documentary and broadcast editing, now leading the Institute's editing curriculum.

Head of Advertising

Yasas Fonseka

Head of Creative Advertising

A former agency creative director who has judged regional advertising award shows and now shapes IVMA's advertising and storytelling programs.

Leads the Institute's overall strategy and operations, with a background in education administration and a commitment to expanding IVMA's regional reach.

Executive Dean

An experienced arts educator and curriculum designer focused on connecting students with creative industry networks locally and internationally.

Director of Studies

Kavindu Rathnayake

Director of Studies (Academic)

Oversees delivery of curriculum standards and academic staff development, with a focus on quality student experience across all IVMA programs.

Membership and Meeting Protocols

Membership of the Academic Board

The protocols for membership and meetings of the Academic Board are as follows. Membership shall consist of:

  • External members appointed by the IVMA Board, holding a post-graduate qualification and university experience in a senior academic position.
  • Internal representative members: one Head of Department from each campus, chosen by the Heads of Department from that campus, and one student representative.
  • The student representative is appointed on a rotational basis, allowing fair representation of all campuses.
  • Ex-officio members: Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee, Chief Executive Officer, Dean, and Head of Postgraduate Studies.
  • The Chair of the Academic Board is appointed by the IVMA Board from among the external members of the Board.

Frequency of Meetings

The Academic Board meets at least four times per year. Additional meetings may be called with the Chair's approval.

Secretariat

The Dean is responsible for providing secretariat services to the Academic Board.

Learning & Teaching Committee

IVMA's Learning and Teaching Committee is a committee of the Academic Board. It is the principal advisory committee on learning and teaching, assists the Board in carrying out its academic governance and leadership functions, and provides recommendations on the maintenance of academic standards and high-quality learning, as well as on policy, initiatives, and innovation.
